Types of IV therapy

“IV therapy” covers several very different kinds of infusions. Knowing the type helps you ask the right questions.

  • Hydration IVs: saline-based fluids with electrolytes and B vitamins, used for dehydration and rehydration after illness, travel, heat or exercise.
  • Vitamin and mineral IVs: blends such as the Myers cocktail that combine magnesium, calcium, B vitamins and vitamin C.
  • Immune-support IVs: higher-dose vitamin C with zinc and, in some formulas, glutathione.
  • Energy, metabolic and recovery IVs: B12, taurine, amino acids and minerals, used around training, recovery or busy periods.
  • Antioxidant IVs: glutathione and alpha-lipoic acid.
  • NAD+ IVs: nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, a coenzyme involved in cellular energy, given slowly over a longer visit.
  • Specialty infusions: high-dose vitamin C, methylene blue, ATP, curcumin and Plaquex (phosphatidylcholine), each with its own screening.
  • Ozone-based therapies: IV ozone and EBOO, which are procedures rather than nutrient drips.

How an IV visit works

  1. Good Faith Examination. Before your first infusion, a licensed member of our medical staff (MD, DO, NP or PA) reviews your history, medications, allergies and any labs, and decides which infusions are appropriate.
  2. Check-in. Vitals are taken and any changes since your last visit are reviewed.
  3. IV placement. A nurse places a small IV catheter, usually in the arm or hand.
  4. Infusion. Most drips take 30 to 60 minutes. You can read, work or rest in the chair while staff monitor you.
  5. Finish. The IV is removed and a bandage applied. Most people return to normal activities right away.

Who should not have IV therapy, or needs extra screening

  • Kidney disease or heart failure: fluid and mineral loads may not be safe.
  • G6PD deficiency: high-dose vitamin C and methylene blue can cause red blood cell breakdown; we test for G6PD first.
  • Certain medications: methylene blue can interact dangerously with serotonergic antidepressants and some other drugs.
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding: most elective infusions are not given.
  • Known allergies to any ingredient, including thiamine or other B vitamins.
  • Kidney stones or iron overload: may limit vitamin C dosing.

Possible side effects

  • Mild discomfort, bruising or a small hematoma at the IV site
  • A cool sensation in the arm, flushing, warmth or a vitamin taste
  • Brighter-colored urine from B vitamins
  • Lightheadedness or fainting (vasovagal reaction)
  • Less commonly: vein irritation (phlebitis), infiltration, infection or an allergic reaction
  • NAD+ can cause chest tightness, nausea or cramping if given too fast, which is why it is infused slowly

Does IV vitamin therapy work? What the research shows

IV nutrients are well established for treating documented deficiencies, dehydration and certain medical situations. For people who are not deficient, the evidence is limited. The most-cited controlled trial of the Myers cocktail found that people improved, but so did the placebo group, and the difference was not statistically significant. We would rather you know that up front. IV nutrient therapy is not FDA-approved for the treatment, cure, mitigation or prevention of any disease, and Venturis Clinic does not treat cancer.

IV therapy cost in Oklahoma City

Cost depends on the formula. Hydration and standard vitamin drips are the least expensive; NAD+, glutathione, high-dose vitamin C and other specialty infusions cost more because of ingredient cost and longer chair time. Add-on injections are priced separately, and series packages lower the per-visit cost. IV therapy is direct-pay and not covered by insurance. We give you the exact price before you book; call (405) 848-7246 for current pricing.

IV therapy FAQ

How long does an IV take?

Most drips take 30 to 60 minutes. NAD+ and some specialty infusions take longer because they are given slowly.

What is in a Myers cocktail?

Magnesium, calcium, B vitamins and vitamin C, diluted in sterile fluid.

How often can I get IV therapy?

It depends on the formula and your exam. Some people come weekly for a short series; others come occasionally. We do not recommend frequent infusions without a reason.

Is IV therapy better than taking vitamins by mouth?

IV delivery bypasses digestion, so blood levels rise higher and faster, which matters for some nutrients and some people. For most healthy people, a good diet and oral supplements cover daily needs.

Do I need bloodwork first?

Every patient has a Good Faith Examination. Basic hydration may not require labs; high-dose vitamin C and methylene blue require G6PD testing, and other labs may be ordered based on your history.

Does it hurt?

You will feel a brief pinch when the IV is placed. Most people feel little after that.

Does insurance cover IV therapy?

No. IV therapy is direct-pay at Venturis Clinic.

I am having chemotherapy. Can I have IV vitamin C?

Only with your oncologist’s knowledge. Some antioxidants may interact with cancer treatment. Venturis Clinic is not a cancer treatment center.

Intravenous nutrient therapy is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment, cure, mitigation or prevention of any disease. IV therapy is offered only after a Good Faith Examination by licensed medical staff, is not appropriate for everyone and is not a substitute for established medical care. Individual results vary.

I cannot say enough AMAZING things about Venturis Clinic and Dr. Alvin Philipose! 🙌🏼❤️‍🩹

If you have been struggling with chronic pain, autoimmune issues, unexplained symptoms, or something doctors just can’t seem to figure out, PLEASE call Dr. Philipose!

I’m so thankful I found Venturis when I was at a complete loss with my neuropathy and CRPS. I had been told by multiple doctors that there was nothing else they could do for me. I was exhausted from being in pain and frustrated from not getting answers.

Then I found Dr. Philipose.

What I love about Venturis is that they don’t just want to put a band-aid on your symptoms. They dig deeper and look at the ROOT CAUSE and ways to support your body’s natural healing process.

I have now had my second ozone injection, and the relief I’ve experienced has been INCREDIBLE. After months of pain, having relief like this feels almost unbelievable. It has given me hope when I was beginning to feel like I had none left. 🙏🏼

I truly believe there are so many people out there who are suffering and have been told, “You just have to live with it.” DON’T GIVE UP.

There may be another approach. There may be someone willing to look deeper. And for me, that someone has been Dr. Philipose and the team at Venturis.

I seriously cannot brag on this clinic enough. ❤️

Venturis Clinic — I will forever be grateful I found you!
I was so pleased to discover this clinic ealier this year and the amazing and knowledgeable Dr Philipose and his awesome staff. After my first EBOO and redlight treatment, I saw immediate relief. My husband has also been getting treatments. Love that Dr P.'s extensive medical expertise is helping us enjoy our retirement lives as we embrace a healthier journey via the clinic's offering.
I took my wife to do an ultrasound and since we step at this clinic until when we left the service was top notch.

The doctor that did our ultrasound was super nice and gave us all her attention showing every detail and answering every single question with patience.

We have an ultrasound scheduled for 5 weeks ahead but we decided to pay out of pocket to see our baby earlier and I can tell you that it worth it.
Most amazing experience I have EVER had with a doctor! This is what all doctors should be!
A Dr., that listens to his patients is worthy of acknowledgment
A doctor that knows how to help a patient without hurting them is a blessing
Dr. Philipose has my utmost appreciation
I was injured in a head on collision in Oct of 24. Constant pain in my neck for over a year. Neurologist recommended surgery. I started looking in to stem cell therapy. After several consults I decided on Venturis. They were able to provide all the care that I required without traveling to Mexico. Dr P was a God send. He was diligent on giving me the care I needed. Approximately 60 days after my Stem cell injections I was pain free. I couldn't believe it. Best decision I've ever made. Thanks again Dr Alvin and Hailey for your dedication to my recovery. I'm forever in your debt.
Dr. Philipose is quite knowledgeable about my knee pain and just with brief exam was able to relieve some pain. I'm confident that soon I'll be pain free.
The staff are very friendly. After having vagal response they were fast to provide the care I need and I felt very safe with them there. I feel like they have the solutions to help people and I wish that insurance would cover these treatments because it would help the world.
If you are struggling with pain, I highly recommend going to see Dr. Philipose. He's helped several of my family members find a tremendous amount of relief from their pain. I have the utmost trust and confidence in Dr. Philipose's knowledge and expertise. He and his clinician staff are the kindest people. They're always so friendly and welcoming. They truly take the time to listen and have your pain be seen. Every experience is pleasant and "good vibes" when you're at Venturis Clinic. I have nothing but positive things to say about them. They always take such good care of me when I am there. I one hundred percent recommend this clinic to anyone. A huge bonus for me is that they are very flexible and understanding if you need to reschedule/cancel an appointment.
I believe I’m just about done with my tare on my rotator cuff with all the procedures that have been done. Dr. Philipose and staff have been wonderful and kind and grateful for his practice and will recommend. I still need to work on my frozen shoulder on a faster pace. Thank you all. Roxanne Gonzales
