Exosome therapy is one of the newest regenerative options being offered, and one of the most aggressively marketed. If you have been researching it, you have probably encountered a great deal of certainty. There is much less certainty in the actual literature, and you deserve to know that before you spend money.
This page explains what exosomes are, what the science does and does not establish, what the FDA has said, and how we approach this at Venturis Clinic.

What exosomes are
Exosomes are extracellular vesicles — very small membrane-bound packets, typically 30 to 150 nanometres, released by cells. They carry proteins, lipids and genetic material including messenger RNA and microRNA.
Their function is signalling. Cells use exosomes to communicate with other cells, including at a distance, and that signalling appears to influence inflammation, tissue repair and immune behaviour. This is well-established cell biology and is not controversial.
What is controversial is the leap from that biology to a clinical treatment. The reasoning behind exosome therapy is that if exosomes carry the signals that direct repair, then administering concentrated exosomes might amplify repair. That is a plausible hypothesis. It has not been established in humans, and the gap between “plausible mechanism” and “proven treatment” is where most of the marketing you have read is operating.
Exosomes are also not stem cells, despite frequently being sold alongside or instead of them. They contain no living cells and cannot become tissue. A product marketed as “stem cell exosomes” is a cell-free preparation.
What the research currently shows
We are going to be blunter here than on any other page on this site.
The laboratory and animal literature on exosomes is substantial and genuinely interesting. Preclinical studies show effects on inflammation, wound healing and tissue repair across a range of models. That work is real.
The human clinical literature is minimal. There are few published randomised controlled trials of exosome products for musculoskeletal or systemic conditions, and the studies that exist are small, early, and often lack the controls needed to draw conclusions. There is no FDA-approved or licensed exosome product for any indication in the United States.
There is also a safety history you should know about. In December 2019 the FDA issued a public safety notification about unapproved exosome products, following reports of patients hospitalised with serious infections after receiving them at a clinic in Nebraska. The FDA has since issued warning letters to multiple companies marketing exosome products, and has stated clearly that these products require approval and that none has been granted. Product quality varies substantially between suppliers, and there is no standardised potency measure — meaning two products both labelled “exosomes” may differ enormously.
We offer exosome therapy as an investigational option only, following individual evaluation, and only where a patient understands the above. If a clinic tells you exosomes will regenerate your joint, reverse ageing, or resolve a named condition, they are describing something the evidence does not currently establish. We are not going to tell you that.
If you are considering exosome therapy anywhere — here or elsewhere — ask the clinic three questions: where does the product come from, what testing has that supplier done, and what is their answer to the FDA’s position. A clinic that cannot answer those clearly is not one you should let inject you.
How we decide whether it is appropriate
Exosome therapy is considered case by case, after evaluation, and often the honest answer is that something better established should come first. We look at:
- Your full history and what has already been tried
- Whether a better-supported option — prolotherapy, PRP, rehabilitation, or a surgical consult — should be tried first
- Current medications and any immune or oncological history
- Whether you understand the investigational status, and whether the cost is a reasonable use of your money given what is known
- Whether your expectations match what this can plausibly do
Many people who ask us about exosome therapy leave with a plan that does not include it. That is not us talking you out of a purchase — it is what an honest evaluation frequently concludes when the better-studied option costs less and has actual trials behind it.

We are direct-pay
Venturis Clinic does not bill insurance, and no insurer covers exosome therapy. It is among the more expensive options offered here, which is another reason we would rather you consider the better-established alternatives first. Cost is discussed openly before anything is scheduled.

We have written this page more cautiously than any other on the site, and that is deliberate.
Regenerative medicine has a marketing problem. Exosomes are the current front edge of it — genuinely interesting science being sold years ahead of the evidence, often at high prices, to people who are unwell and have run out of other options. We are not willing to participate in that, even though a more enthusiastic page would probably rank and convert better in the short term.
