The immune system attacking the nervous system — new research is reshaping how we understand Long COVID. 🧠
A 2026 NIH-funded study (Yale + Mount Sinai, published in Cell) found that many Long COVID patients carry autoantibodies — immune proteins that mistakenly target the body`s own nervous system tissue. In their analysis of 147 people, antibodies from Long COVID patients reacted with nervous-system tissue far more often than those from healthy individuals.
Even more striking: where those antibodies attacked predicted which symptoms patients had. Those targeting a brainstem region called the locus coeruleus were more likely to have lost their sense of taste and smell.
Why this matters: it adds to the growing evidence that Long COVID — and the brain fog, fatigue, and dysautonomia that come with it — may be driven by immune dysregulation, not just lingering virus. And that opens the door to looking at these patients through a functional, root-cause lens.
