What Is a Migraine?
A migraine is an intense, often throbbing headache, typically on one side of the head. Migraines are a neurological condition, and many people also experience nausea, light and sound sensitivity, or visual aura.

Common Migraine Triggers
- Hormonal changes, especially in women
- Alcohol
- Bright lights and strong smells
- Stress
- Certain medications
- Sleep disturbances, too much or too little
- Skipping meals or fasting
- Weather changes, especially shifts in air pressure
Symptoms
- Throbbing head pain
- Nausea or vomiting
- Sensitivity to light, sound, or smell
- Visual disturbances (aura)
- Tingling or numbness
- Neck stiffness
- Mood changes or fatigue
Seek emergency care for a sudden, severe “worst ever” headache, a headache with fever and stiff neck, weakness, confusion, trouble speaking, or vision loss.
Where Prolotherapy Fits
Prolotherapy is not a standard migraine treatment, and it doesn’t replace care from your primary care provider or neurologist. It may be worth discussing when headaches appear connected to neck problems, such as strained or lax ligaments in the upper neck, which can contribute to head pain in some people.
How It Works
Prolotherapy involves injecting a solution, typically dextrose with a local anesthetic, into strained ligaments and tendons. The goal is to trigger a controlled healing response that supports tissue repair. Some practitioners also use ozone-based injections, sometimes called prolozone.
What the Evidence Shows
Research on prolotherapy for migraine is limited and mostly small studies. Some patients with neck-related headaches report improvement, but results vary and no outcome is guaranteed.
Is It Right for You?
If you have chronic headaches that seem tied to your neck and standard treatments haven’t helped enough, a thorough evaluation can help determine whether prolotherapy is a reasonable option.
