You’ve been sick since living in a water-damaged building, and you keep seeing urine mycotoxin tests recommended online. Some people post results with long lists of “positive” toxins. It’s tempting to think one test will finally prove what’s been making you sick.
These tests can provide information. They also have serious limits that are rarely explained. Here’s the honest picture.
What mycotoxins are
Mycotoxins are chemical compounds produced by certain molds. Some, like aflatoxins and ochratoxin A, are well-studied food contaminants regulated in the food supply. Mold growing in damp buildings can also produce mycotoxins.
What a urine mycotoxin test measures
These tests look for specific mycotoxins, or their breakdown products, in a urine sample. A detected result tells you that the compound was present in your urine at the time of the sample.
What it doesn’t tell you
Where the exposure came from. Food is a major source of mycotoxin exposure. Ochratoxin A, for example, is found in grains, coffee, dried fruit, wine, and spices. Population studies in several countries have detected mycotoxins in the urine of many people with no known building exposure. A positive result doesn’t show that your home or workplace is the source.
Whether the level is causing symptoms. Well-established reference ranges connecting urine mycotoxin levels to symptoms or illness from building exposure don’t currently exist.
Whether you’re sick because of it. Detection isn’t the same as disease. Many people with detectable levels have no symptoms, and people with significant symptoms can test low.
Consistent results between labs. These tests are generally offered as laboratory-developed tests, and methods and reporting differ from lab to lab.
Common ways results get misread
- Treating any detected mycotoxin as proof of mold illness
- Assuming food-derived mycotoxins came from the house
- Repeating tests over time and attributing changes to recovery, when diet and timing can shift results
- Making major decisions, like moving or discarding belongings, based on a urine test alone
What about testing the building?
Environmental testing has its own limits:
- Air samples capture a brief snapshot and can miss hidden growth.
- Dust-based indexes like ERMI were developed as research tools, and their use for decisions about individual homes is debated.
A qualified inspection to find moisture sources is usually more useful than any single test. The moisture problem is what has to be fixed.
Where testing can fit
Testing is most useful as one piece of a larger picture, interpreted alongside:
- your exposure history and timeline,
- how symptoms change by location,
- findings from a building inspection, and
- evaluation for other causes of your symptoms.

Frequently asked questions
Does a positive urine mycotoxin test mean I have mold illness? No. It shows the compound was present, but mycotoxins are common in food, and levels aren’t validated against building-related illness.
Can a negative test rule out mold-related illness? No. A negative result doesn’t exclude effects of a damp building.
Are mycotoxins in food the same as those from mold in buildings? Some are the same compounds, which is exactly why urine testing can’t tell you the source.
Should I get a mycotoxin test? It can be discussed as part of a broader evaluation, with clear expectations about what it can and can’t answer.
