“How many sessions will I need?” is the most common question about prolotherapy, and an honest answer is that it depends on you. Here is how treatment plans are typically thought about.
A quick refresher
Prolotherapy is an injection technique in which a dextrose (sugar) solution is placed in or around painful joints, ligaments, or tendons. It is used by some clinicians for chronic musculoskeletal pain. Evidence varies by condition, and results differ from person to person. For an overview of how it compares with other approaches, see Prolotherapy vs PRP: How They Compare.
Why it is usually a series
Prolotherapy is not typically a single-visit treatment. Plans commonly involve a series of injection visits spaced several weeks apart, with progress reviewed along the way. The exact schedule is set by your clinician after an exam.
What shapes the plan
- The area treated: a single knee differs from multiple spinal or pelvic regions.
- How long symptoms have been present: longer-standing problems may need a longer plan.
- Your overall health and activity: nutrition, sleep, and load on the joint all matter.
- Your response: the plan can be adjusted or stopped depending on how you are doing.
What to ask at your consultation
- What is the proposed number and spacing of visits?
- How will we measure whether it is helping?
- What happens if I do not improve?
- What does the full plan cost?
Cost and coverage
Prolotherapy is typically not covered by insurance. We explain why in Why Isn’t Prolotherapy Covered by Insurance?
