HomeBlogProlotherapy vs Ozone Joint Injections: How They Differ

By Venturis Clinic

Prolotherapy and ozone joint injections are sometimes mentioned together, but they are different procedures. This article explains how they differ without suggesting that one works better than the other.

What each involves

  • Dextrose prolotherapy: injection of a dextrose solution into or around painful joints, ligaments, or tendons.
  • Ozone (prolozone) joint injections: injection of an oxygen-ozone gas mixture, sometimes combined with other solutions, into or around joints. Ozone joint injections are considered investigational.

What the research looks like

Studies on both approaches exist, but quality and results vary, and neither is a guaranteed fix. For the ozone side, read How Long Does an Ozone Knee Injection Last?

How clinicians choose

The choice depends on your diagnosis, your history, your preferences, and your clinician’s experience. Some plans use one, some the other, and some neither. Ask why a particular approach is being recommended for you.

Questions to ask

  • What is the evidence for this approach in my condition?
  • What are the risks and expected number of visits?
  • What are the alternatives, including non-injection options?
