Sick After Water Damage at Home

The hailstorm damaged the roof. The water heater leaked for weeks before anyone noticed. The basement flooded in a spring storm. Months later, you’re congested all the time, your head aches, you’re exhausted, and your family seems to be getting sick more often too.

When health changes follow water damage, the connection deserves a serious look.

Why water damage matters

Mold needs moisture. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, wet materials that aren’t dried within 24 to 48 hours can begin growing mold.

The problems often hide:

  • inside walls,
  • under flooring,
  • in attics, crawlspaces, and HVAC systems, and
  • behind cabinets.

Damp buildings don’t just grow mold. They can also harbor bacteria and release chemical byproducts from deteriorating materials.

The World Health Organization (2009) and the Institute of Medicine (2004) both concluded that indoor dampness and mold are associated with respiratory symptoms, asthma development and flare-ups, respiratory infections, and allergic conditions.

Oklahoma’s water damage problem

Oklahoma sees severe thunderstorms, hail, tornado damage, flash flooding, and humid summers. Roof damage that looks minor, a slow plumbing leak, or a poorly ventilated crawlspace can create hidden moisture for months.

  • Headaches
  • Fatigue that doesn’t match your activity
  • Brain fog or trouble concentrating
  • Red, itchy, or watery eyes
  • Skin rashes or itching

A key clue: symptoms that change with location. Better away, worse on return.

What to do first

  1. Find and fix the moisture source. Mold problems return if the water problem isn’t solved.
  2. Get a qualified inspection if you suspect hidden damage, especially after flooding, a long-running leak, or a musty smell with no visible source.
  3. Follow proper cleanup guidance. The EPA recommends professional help for larger contaminated areas, or when the HVAC system may be affected.
  4. Protect vulnerable people. People with asthma, lung disease, or weakened immune systems shouldn’t do mold cleanup themselves.
  5. Write down your timeline: when the damage happened, when symptoms started, and how they change with location.

How it is evaluated

  • An exposure history: home, work, school, and car, plus dates and the extent of water damage.
  • The symptom pattern across body systems, and how it changes with location.
  • Review of prior testing, including allergy testing and lung function.

  • Ruling out other causes: asthma, sinus disease, thyroid problems, anemia, sleep disorders.

When to get emergency care

Call 911 for:

  • severe shortness of breath,
  • wheezing that doesn’t improve with your rescue inhaler,
  • chest pain, or
  • high fever with difficulty breathing.
