HomeBlogBPC-157: What the Research Shows and Why FDA Status Matters

BPC-157 is one of the most popular “healing peptides” online, promoted for tendon injuries, gut problems, and faster recovery. Here’s what’s actually known about it, and why its regulatory status matters.

What BPC-157 is

BPC-157 (“body protection compound”) is a synthetic peptide of 15 amino acids, based on a sequence derived from a protein found in stomach juice. It is not a naturally occurring hormone and not an approved medication.

What the research shows

  • Animal studies: most BPC-157 research comes from rodent studies, many from a single research group. These report effects on tendon, ligament, muscle, and gut healing, and on blood vessel growth.
  • Human studies: published human data are extremely limited, consisting of a few small, early studies. There are no large, controlled clinical trials establishing that BPC-157 is effective or safe in people.
  • Long-term safety: unknown. Because it may promote blood vessel growth, researchers have raised theoretical questions about its use in people with cancer or a history of cancer; this hasn’t been studied.

Regulatory status

  • Not FDA-approved for any medical use.
  • In 2023, the FDA placed BPC-157 in Category 2 of its list of substances nominated for compounding, meaning the agency identified potential significant safety risks. Compounding pharmacies are generally restricted from compounding substances in this category.
  • Prohibited in sports: the World Anti-Doping Agency lists BPC-157 as a prohibited substance.
  • “Research use only” products sold online are not approved for human use, and their contents and purity can’t be verified.

What this means for patients

For tendon, ligament, and joint injuries, evidence-based options with established safety data exist, including structured rehabilitation and treatments supported by clinical trials. For gut problems, the underlying cause should be evaluated before trying unapproved compounds.

Frequently asked questions

Is BPC-157 FDA-approved?
No. It isn’t approved for any medical use.

Does BPC-157 work in humans?
Human evidence is extremely limited. Most research is in animals.

Can I get BPC-157 from a compounding pharmacy?
The FDA placed it in a category of substances with potential significant safety risks, which generally restricts compounding.

Is BPC-157 banned in sports?
Yes. It’s prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency.
