When you look into B12 injections, you will see two common names: methylcobalamin and cyanocobalamin. Here is a plain comparison.
The two forms
- Cyanocobalamin: a synthetic form widely used in supplements and standard medical care.
- Methylcobalamin: a form that occurs naturally in food and is commonly used in functional and integrative practices.
Is one better?
The research does not clearly show that one form is better for everyone. Both can raise B12 levels, and the right choice depends on your situation, any genetic or absorption considerations your clinician is aware of, and preference. We do not claim either form is superior.
Testing still matters
A normal serum level does not always settle the question. Read A Normal B12 Level Does Not Rule Out a B12 Problem.
Questions to ask your clinic
- Which form do you use, and why?
- How often are injections given, and how will we recheck levels?
- Could another cause explain my symptoms?
