What is functional medicine?

Functional medicine is an approach to care that looks for the drivers behind symptoms rather than treating each symptom on its own. It uses the same physiology and much of the same testing as conventional medicine, but it spends more time on how body systems interact: digestion, immune function, hormones, metabolism, sleep, environmental exposures and stress. The visit is longer, the history is more detailed, and the plan usually combines nutrition and lifestyle changes with targeted supplements, medications when appropriate, and in-clinic therapies.

Functional medicine is not a replacement for emergency care, surgery or specialist treatment of serious disease. At its best, it works alongside your primary care physician and specialists.

Who we see

Most of our patients arrive after years of normal-looking labs and specialist visits that did not add up to an answer. Common reasons people come to us include:

  • Persistent symptoms after COVID or another viral illness, such as fatigue, brain fog or crashes after exertion. See long COVID in Oklahoma City.
  • Reactions to many foods, smells or medications, flushing and hives. See MCAS in Oklahoma City.
  • Illness after exposure to a water-damaged building. See mold illness and CIRS.
  • Dizziness or a racing heart on standing. See dysautonomia.
  • Joint hypermobility with multi-system symptoms
  • Numbness, burning or tingling with normal standard testing. See neuropathy in Oklahoma City.
  • Autoimmune patterns, chronic gut problems, hormone and thyroid questions, and unexplained fatigue

How functional medicine works at Venturis

  1. Free 15-minute discovery call. We talk through what is going on and tell you honestly whether we are a good fit.
  2. Initial consultation and Good Faith Examination. A longer visit with a licensed member of our medical staff to review your full history, timeline, medications, prior records and goals.
  3. Targeted testing. We start with tests that answer specific questions and add specialty panels only when they will change what we do.
  4. Results review and written plan. We walk through every result and give you a prioritized plan: what to change first, what to add, and what to recheck.
  5. Follow-up. Plans are adjusted at scheduled follow-ups based on how you respond. Some follow-ups can be done by telehealth for Oklahoma patients.

Functional medicine testing we use

Testing is performed by CLIA-certified laboratories. Depending on your history, it may include:

  • Comprehensive blood work, including thyroid, metabolic, nutrient and inflammatory markers
  • Stool testing such as GI-MAP for digestive and microbiome questions
  • Hormone testing such as DUTCH
  • Food and immune reactivity panels such as Cyrex
  • Mycotoxin testing for patients with mold exposure
  • Genetic testing, including nutrigenomic panels and genome sequencing

See the full list on our lab testing page.

What a plan may include

  • Nutrition changes matched to your test results and symptoms
  • Sleep, stress, movement and environmental changes
  • Targeted supplements, with a clear reason for each one
  • Prescription medications when appropriate, through a licensed prescriber
  • In-clinic therapies when appropriate, such as IV nutrient therapy, ozone therapy or EBOO
  • Coordination with your primary care physician and specialists

Not every patient needs in-clinic therapies, and we will tell you when a conventional referral should come first.

Functional medicine vs. conventional medicine

Conventional visit Functional medicine visit
Visit length Often 10 to 20 minutes Much longer initial visit
Main question What is the diagnosis, and what treats it? What is driving these symptoms in this person?
Testing Standard ranges for diagnosis Standard testing plus targeted functional panels
Plan Usually medication or referral Nutrition, lifestyle, supplements, medication and therapies as needed
Payment Usually insurance Often direct-pay

Functional medicine cost in Oklahoma City

Venturis Clinic is direct-pay. Your cost depends on three things: the initial consultation, the lab tests you choose to do, and the number of follow-up visits. We quote the consultation fee up front and give you test pricing before anything is ordered, so you can decide what fits your budget. Some lab companies offer their own payment options, and you are welcome to use labs your own physician has already run.

Serving Oklahoma City, Tulsa and all of Oklahoma

Our clinic is in the Nichols Hills area of north Oklahoma City, convenient to Edmond, Norman, Moore, Yukon, Mustang and Midwest City. Many patients travel in from Tulsa and other parts of Oklahoma. To reduce trips, we can often do your discovery call by phone and some follow-ups by telehealth, and plan in-person visits so labs and treatments happen on the same day.

Functional medicine FAQ

What does a functional medicine practitioner do?

They take a detailed history, look for patterns across body systems, order targeted testing, and build a step-by-step plan that addresses the drivers of your symptoms, alongside any care you get from your other physicians.

Does insurance cover functional medicine?

Often not. Venturis Clinic is direct-pay and does not bill insurance. Some patients use HSA or FSA funds; check with your plan administrator.

Are there functional medicine providers in Oklahoma?

Yes. Venturis Clinic provides functional medicine in Oklahoma City for patients across the state, including Tulsa.

What is the downside of functional medicine?

It takes time and money, insurance rarely covers it, and some testing and supplements promoted online are not well supported by evidence. A good practitioner orders only tests that will change the plan, explains the evidence honestly and sends you to conventional care when that is the right next step.

How long until I notice a difference?

It varies. Some changes, such as diet and sleep, can help within weeks; complex, long-standing problems usually take months. We set check-in points so you can judge whether the plan is working.

Do I have to stop seeing my regular doctor?

No. We encourage you to keep your primary care physician and specialists, and we are happy to coordinate with them.
