Mold Illness and CIRS in Oklahoma City

What is established

Damp buildings are bad for health. Major reviews agree:

  • The World Health Organization (2009) found sufficient evidence that indoor dampness and mold are associated with respiratory symptoms, asthma, respiratory infections, and allergic conditions.
  • The Institute of Medicine (2004) reached similar conclusions.

Recognized mold-related conditions include mold allergy, asthma triggered or worsened by damp environments, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, and certain fungal infections in people with weakened immune systems.

What is debated: CIRS

Chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS) is a framework developed by Ritchie Shoemaker, MD. It proposes that, in some genetically susceptible people, exposure to water-damaged buildings triggers ongoing, body-wide inflammation. That inflammation is said to cause fatigue, cognitive problems, pain, and symptoms across multiple systems.

We want to be straightforward: CIRS is not universally accepted in conventional medicine. Several of the lab markers used within the framework are nonspecific or not well validated, and high-quality controlled research is limited. At the same time, many patients with multisystem illness after water damage don’t fit neatly into recognized categories.

Our approach is to take the exposure and the symptoms seriously, evaluate carefully, and be clear about what the evidence does and doesn’t support.

Common symptoms reported after water-damaged building exposure

  • Fatigue and low stamina
  • Brain fog, memory, and concentration problems
  • Headaches, sinus congestion, cough, shortness of breath
  • Muscle aches, joint pain, morning stiffness
  • Numbness, tingling, or unusual skin sensations
  • Increased thirst and frequent urination
  • Light sensitivity, red eyes, blurred vision
  • Temperature regulation problems and night sweats
  • Symptoms that improve away from the building and return on re-entry

How it is evaluated

  • An exposure history: where you live and work, known leaks or flooding, when symptoms started, and whether they change with location.
  • The symptom pattern across body systems.
  • Review of prior testing, including allergy and lung function results.

  • Ruling out other causes: thyroid disease, anemia, sleep apnea, autoimmune conditions, and infections.
